Basic SEO tips that make a difference

Nowadays its very easy to get a website running through free and paid for services, with the abundance of content out there it is getting harder and harder to get your material or site noticed.

Web optimization is easier if you are using a system like wordpress but the technique(s) will work for both CMS systems like wordpress and traditional websites.

1. Give your Page meta tags (in the case of  Wordpress tag your pages and posts).

2. Always title your pages and try yo use relevant text (what the page actually contains). Do not duplicate titles!

For example instead of always titling your pages with the name of your site or business name; Base the title on the service or content that page offers the viewer.

3. Link to internal pages on your site to encourage click through’s and optimize other pages within the site.

Example ‘You may also like  Designing Paulvfinch.co.uk’

This optimise’s that page for that search phrase, the wrong way to implement this technique would be

Example ‘You may also like http://www.paulvfinch.co.uk/wordpress/?p=87‘

This doesn’t optimize the page for a phrase it only provides a link.

4. Links on external sites

This is by far the most effective technique for pushing your site and pages up the google and other search engine organic rankings.

Example

If I wanted to optimize this site for ‘Graphic design services Edinburgh’  I would create a link code that would function like this.   ‘Graphic design services Edinburgh: Paul Finch is a graphic/web designer based in Edinburgh’

‘<a href=”http://www.paulvfinch.co.uk/”>Graphic design services Edinburgh</a>: Paul Finch is a graphic/web designer based in Edinburgh’

So basically linking phrases gets results. Try and get links on sites that are relevant to your content and site if possible. There are many link directories where you can exchange links with other sites and blogs.
